You might not think that the state that epitomizes big sky country has enough people to support a whole list of charities that take cars, but you’d be wrong. Sure, the list is short, but if you want to help your fellow Montanans by donating a car or other vehicle, here are some good options.
The first thing you need to know about the charities listed here is that they are all certified with 503(c)(3) status by the Internal Revenue Service, so as long as you and your donation meet the other IRS rules, a gift to these charities will qualify for an income tax deduction. The next thing to know is that all these charities have been reviewed by the website Charity Navigator for their financial efficiency and effectiveness. Charity Navigator is internationally recognized as an authority. Their ranking system works from zero stars (poor) to 4 stars. Charities with a 4-star rating are in the top 10% or less of US charities in terms of their financial responsibility.
The Billings Food Bank
P.O. BOX 1158, 2112 4th Avenue North, Billings, MT 59103
toll-free 1- 833-866-7869 to donate
This foodbank supports more than 40 different charities and government programs in its county, in addition to being a source for nutritional and health information and direct food support for the public. It does not have a car donation program, but they accept a wide range of in-kind gifts, and the nature of their work suggests they might well be able to use a car or other vehicle so long as it is in good running condition. So they are definitely worth a call, just to check. 4-star charity.
745 Indian Trail, P.O. Drawer 879, Billings, Montana 59103-0879
toll-free 1- 844-331-0007 to donate
A fine charity established to serve and support Cheyenne Indian elders, with the goal of someday being able to build an Assisted Living facility so that elders who need this kind of housing do not have to be taken hundreds of miles away from their homes and families in their later years. Soaring Eagle needs a new or used school bus. Also takes in a lot of difference in-kind gifts. Definitely worth a call even if the vehicle you want to donate is not a school bus. 3-star charity.
